Never Too Late

Meet Sophia: Pediatric Cancer Survivor and Event Sous Chef

Sophia Kaplanis

“…by July 21 I was diagnosed with stage 4 Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma at 14 years old. Within the next nine months I went through chemotherapy and over 35 rounds of radiation, I finally completed treatment in the summer of 2017. After my last treatment I would return to the hospital every 3 months to make sure I remained cancer free. In march of 2017 at my 9 month post treatment scan my doctors found a new tumor in my chest, a relapse of my cancer and then again at 16 I was thrown into the fight, but this time I would be on chemo for nearly 2 years.

After about 19 months of chemo and another 20 rounds of radiation I finished treatment yet again in November of 2019 at 18. I have remained cancer free since and am nearing 3 years in remission. I do struggle with a lot of the side effects from treatment, but I’m currently in school to become a nurse within the next few years. My goal is to help kids who were in the same situation as me, and to provide hope when it seems like there’s nothing but darkness.”
